Here’s How This Works

Soft-tissues in the body include muscles, tendons, ligaments, and even tissues such as skin. Our bodies are webs of soft-tissues, with all tissues fulfilling a certain functions like holding organs in place or connecting a muscle to a bone, all while gliding on top of each other.

As an analogy, think about the clothes you’re wearing. They allow you to move freely, because the fabric glides across your skin. You can bend down or raise your arms over head, without having to use more tension than normal.

This is how soft-tissues in your body are supposed to work.

If you have soft-tissue problems, those tissues can no longer glide smoothly on top of each other. They’re stuck together.

Think about the last time you were caught in the rain and returned home soaking wet. Personally, I hate the feeling of wet clothes on my skin so I try to move as little as possible. What’s even worse, everything gets super sticky and a simple shirt practically turns into a straight-jacket.

Trying to get out of that wet shirt requires a ton of effort and a lot of tension. The same thing happens in your body when you have soft-tissue problems. Tissues stick to each other, restrict your movement, and you have to use more tension to get things moving.

These tissue problems can happen because of injuries, such as bumping into the corner of a table with your leg for example, but they can also be caused by not having enough movement variety such as too much sitting.

As a result, some parts of your body, like your knee, will become overloaded. This is why you need to fix soft-tissue problems to get rid of knee pain and the most convenient way to do this is self-massage.
